How Important is Kindergarten Math – Choose4Me – 25 Nov 2010

A recent study conducted in 2007 shows the heightened importance of early math and reading skills for children getting ready for school.. “We find the single most important factor in predicting later academic achievement is that children begin school with a mastery of early math and literacy concepts,” says Northwestern University research Greg Duncan

But the importance of a solid foundation in early mathematics is. However, the degree to which early math skills play a role is. “The paramount importance of early math skills – of beginning school with a knowledge of numbers, number order and other rudimentary math concepts — is one of the puzzles coming out of the study,” said Duncan.

The data from the six longitudinal studies and over 36,000 children, indicated that early skills in mathematics are a greater predictor of a child’s future academic success than early reading, attention skills, and socioeconmic factors!

Technology has made great strides in the past several years in the area of childrens educational software. However many of the technical advances can be overwhelming to children just starting school. Online 3D worlds and virtual pets may be beneficial for older children using the computer to build skills while playing. Websites with 3D graphics and online virtual worlds may be a useful tool for older children looking to build skills while having fun on the computer. Kindergarten and preschool children are easily distracted by the overuse of technology in many of these programs.

Children in preschool and kindergarten should be using computer software created just for them. While it is important for young children to gain familiarity with the use of a computer, it is equally important that they are able to use software designed just for their age group.

In addition, real-time performance reporting is available immediately so parents and caregivers can focus on the most important areas that will help children prepare for success in school. Google Gives $250,000 to Tech Education for Needy Communities – Mashable – 30 Nov 2010

Google has just pledged $250,000 to iGotITtoo, an organization that brings technology training and other tools to underserved communities, that will allow the charity to expand across New York City.
The organization was founded in 2007, and its name stands for “I’ve got information technology, too.” It currently operates in Brooklyn, where community members were attempting to make sure everyone in the area had access to technological tools — tools that can sometimes make a huge difference in access to services and quality of life.
The two iGotITtoo co-founders began teaching community center computer classes to address this need; their efforts were met by a growing demand, and iGotITtoo now boasts a staff of 30 volunteers teaching two to three classes and labs per week at each of the organization’s three locations in Brooklyn.
CEO Santana Kenner said in a statement on Tuesday, “It is our mission to end digital inequality by building communities’ capacities to leverage technology to improve educational and economic opportunities — a pattern which affects social capital in both the physical and digital domains.” iGotITtoo is planning a citywide launch in 2011.

Survey: elderly and technology – Enerexxo - 21 Nov 2010

If we want to know if elderly are interested in technology or not, we could better ask them. So I did a little survey on the market Friday morning to have an idea of their point of view. My target group was elderly from an age 70 or older. I interviewed 44 persons.

These were the questions:

1) Which technology are you already using these days?

Cell phone
Personal computer
Internet
2 a) If you ever are less mobile, would you use following technologies that could improve your way of living?

Internet (for instance online shopping…)
An aid for mobility (wheelchair…)
Others
2 b) Would/ are you receptive to medical applications (for instance: a hearing aid)

2c) What is the maximal learning period a new technology may be?

3) Suppose your muscles are too weak, so you can’t walk anymore. Which of the two following techniques would you prefer:

An exoskeleton. A new technology that measures the signals of your brain to your legs. This measurement is painless. This technology controls an appliance (sort of a robot around the knee) with you can walk again.

Results:

66% of the elderly has a cell phone, and 47,73% has a personal computer and internet. The reasons that some elderly haven’t one of these are mostly the same: they don’t want to be accessible at any time (for the cell phone) , some find it to difficult and think they are too old for learning these technologies.

When the elderly have problems with their mobility, only 38,63 % will use internet as an aid. The majority prefer family, friends, neighbors to help them with their basic needs (food, …). These percentage is lower than the percentage (47,73%) of people who has internet. Reasons? Elderly prefer the social contacts, and they are aware of the extra cost of internet shopping and delivery at home.

Technology as medical applications are more accepted. 87% of the target group would use these medical applications if there is no other choice. They know the consequences of getting older, but as long as they could have their socials contact and mobility the majority is happy. I think that the urge of social contacts and mobility is the reason why medical applications are more accepted for them than luxury goods like cell phones and PC’s. This sounds strange because PC’s and cellphones could also improve your social contacts. (Read the blogpost of karelvanderelst “On social networking”). 73 % Of the elderly prefer an exoskeleton in stead of a wheelchair (if cost is not an issue), and most of them would have patience to learn these medical applications.

My conclusion:

I think a lot of the elderly are receptive to technology, especially if there is a medical problem that attacks their urge of social contacts and mobility. Simplicity of the applications and price are also important factors.

 

Are the elderly welcome in our new technologies? – Enerexxo - 26 Nov 2010

In this post I would like to discuss wether or not the younger generation is keen on letting the old one in on “their” new technologies.  Even if the senior citizens want to use the technologies are they in some way “allowed”?

Of course this is not a question that I can give a absolute answer on. But I will tell you a story that can give a glims on how the youth reacts to an elder in their midst.

The story is this:

On August the fifth 2006, Peter Oakley a 83 year old pensioner from Leichester, England, posted his first blog on youtube.

He had just become a widower and wanted , as he said in an interview commited by unruly Media (see link below), to “meet new people and find penfriends – but without disrupting his ‘reclusive life’ behind the screen.” What followed whas a youtube ‘boom’.
The uploaded video got over 400.000 views in less than a week (and is currently at almost 3 million views). On top of that he got a staggering amount of comments and mails which he one by one read and replied to, thuss resulting in new aqcuaintances and even friends.

This story shows us that the elderly are not only allowed on new technologies, but might also be embraced in doing this by the younger generations.

Of course this one testimony doesn’t mean that seniors are always admitted on every technology.

As can be seen on this facebook group , or this site there is a lot of criticism on wether or not elder people are allowed to drive on the roads. This discussion, in my opinion, goes further than issues about safety because the solution often mentioned is that there should be a new driving test of some sort at the age of 70 (currently being used in the UK). What strikes me in this solution is that in every age section, there are people who drive more dangerous then the average elder, and that the lost of sight and reflexes is not something that invariatly just ‘pops up’ at the age of 70. Therefore, if your only goal was more safety,
it would be a vastly better measure to ask for a license renewal every, say, twenty years or so. The fact that this is not the case gives me the feeling that there is more going on here, that in our subconsious we just don’t like elderly to mingle with ‘our’ techology at there pace.

As you can see a conclusion is not simple to make. In some instances our senior citizens are allowed and embraced in our new technologies, but on the other hand, we can sometimes have the urge to exclude them from some technologies, especially when their interference comes at a cost to our speed and freedom. So, when we think about elderly not being capable of doing a certain job, we should always ask to ourselves if we are really just focussing on objective reasons, or if we are just scared to be held up by our elder citizens.

New technology, programs help disabled employees become more successful

Ed Abel’s office at the Abel Law Firm is quietly powerful and tactful, much like the man himself. As one of Oklahoma City’s most successful lawyers, he sits behind a deep cherry-red wooden desk, lounging back and speaking clearly.

Yet he doesn’t drive. He doesn’t read. He doesn’t even recognize his clients.

Abel doesn’t see.

As one of thousands of professionals employed in the United States, Abel is blind. But losing his eyesight early in his career didn’t stop him from going on to grow a large, thriving practice. More and more, the disabled are becoming successful business people, thanks to governmental aid programs and, more importantly, technology that makes doing business easier for those who cannot see, hear, move or speak.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, disabled people are nearly twice as likely as the non-disabled to start a business.

Nearly 15% of working disabled people are self-employed, compared to 10% of non-disabled working people. The Disabled Businesspersons Association claims that 40% of home-based businesses are operated by people with disabilities.

“The new technology available today can make it possible for those with disabilities to have fulfilling careers,” says Jody Harlan of the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services. “Today we have more and more opportunities for people with disabilities to enter the workforce or start their own businesses.”

Abel and willing
In the 1970s, Abel was a budding lawyer with a promising career in personal injury litigation. While driving back from a ski trip in Colorado, he kept swatting at a bug that flew in and out of his field of vision.

“It wasn’t a bug, but I kept seeing this spot in my vision,” he says. “What I was having were small hemorrhages in my eye. I went to the doctor and he said, ‘You’ll be blind in a year.’”

A type 1 diabetic since age 8, Abel knew he had the risk of losing his eyesight, but still, the idea of being blind was a shock.

“It scared me to death,” he says. “I had a family, two little girls to support. I was early in my law career, and I just kept thinking, ‘This can’t be right. What in the world am I going to do?’”

For many adults facing such news, fear and depression easily can set back a promising career. Although successful now, Abel faced that same danger.

“There were two or three things that helped me,” he says. “One was my faith in God. I really feel that during my lifetime, I’ve had several prayers really answered. Secondly, I got good counseling. We guys are supposed to be tough, you know, but I found counseling was extremely helpful. Thirdly, I had excellent medical care, and I didn’t go completely blind in a year.”

Although his vision didn’t disappear completely until a few years ago, the disability made it impossible for him to perform simple, everyday tasks.

“I got to the point where I couldn’t recognize faces, and for some reason, I was very embarrassed by that,” Abel says. “But some of the clients I represented, I learned from.”

One of them was a young man who was burned on more than 80% of his body and horribly disfigured, but more accepting of himself than Abel was at the time.

“I asked him, ‘How do you stand it when you walk in and people stare at you?’ He said he had to get to the point that he realized he was not his neighbor’s greatest concern,” Abel says. “In five minutes, that person who is staring will go back to other worries. That struck a chord in me. I realized I was not my neighbors’ greatest concern.”

The young man went on to become a successful surgeon, and it was a lesson Abel hasn’t forgotten. For 44 years, Abel has successfully practiced law in Oklahoma City.

“I decided this was who I was now,” he says. “I can cry about it or I can get up and make today the best day. I have to figure out how to make today work for me.”

That means hiring a full-time assistant who drives him, reads to him and assists him. Although some privacy and personal freedom are sacrificed, Abel said he’s still able to run a successful business.

Making it work
Being disabled in the workforce is becoming more accommodating, says Harlan. For instance, many governmental programs, such as the Department of Rehabilitation Services, offer incentives and assistance to employers who hire disabled candidates.

“Now, technology really narrows the gap,” Harlan says. “That’s the reason we offer incentives to employers who hire the disabled. The same applications we use to make our lives easier, like DragonDictate, have been used by the disabled for years.”

Technology, training and the growth of telecommuting jobs mean more opportunities for the disabled.

“Telecommuting and flexible scheduling can mean the difference between not working and doing the job just fine,” Harlan says. “In terms of looking for a job, our department offers stimulus money to help employers pay for a person with a disability, for training and necessary startup costs.”

In 2009, the department’s divisions of Vocational Rehabilitation and Visual Services helped 1,689 people with disabilities start new jobs.

As a result, they reduced the need for disability benefits and social services, and paid taxes on collective earnings of $19.2 million. The divisions also provided career-preparation services to 12,431 Oklahomans.
Both divisions work with employers to match qualified employees with job opportunities, share costs of bringing new employees up to speed, and advise on available tax credits and deductions for hiring workers with disabilities.

“Disabled employees are four to five times more likely to stay on the job,” Harlan says. “They don’t take their jobs lightly. Employing the disabled is also good for the state– it’s good for the person being hired, it’s good for the company hiring and it’s good for the taxpayer.”

Census figures
According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s “2007 American Community Survey,” Oklahomans with disabilities were employed at a rate of 37.7% in 2007, compared to 80.4% for nondisabled people in the work-age population.

“Nearly 12% of our staff have disabilities, and we find that they are dedicated and committed to helping others go to work,” says Michael O’Brien, DRS director.

According to the U. S. Census Bureau, 49.7 million Americans have a disability, with two-thirds of these having a severe disability. The 2000 Census reported the total number of people with disabilities aged 16-64 is slightly more than 33 million. Of those, the total number employed is nearly 18.6 million.

Of the 18.6 million people aged 16-64 employed with disabilities, 60.1% of men with disabilities are employed, and 51.4% of women with disabilities are employed.

Children's Role in home-school relationships and the role of digital technologies

Digital technologies are an integral part of many families’ home environments and communication strategies, and are increasingly used by schools to support learning, communicate with parents and provide access to school resources from the home and so may offer opportunities to facilitate communication and the building of relationships between home and school.

This review provides an overview of the key debates and current practice and research into home-school
relationships, with a particular focus on children’s role and the opportunities offered by digital technologies to
facilitate home-school relationships.

In order to explore children’s role in home-school relationships, the role of parents in home-school relationships will first be discussed, focusing on parental engagement and parent-school partnerships.

The review will then move on from looking at parents relationships with schools to looking more broadly at
connections between learning in the different contexts of home and school. It then goes on to explore how children  themselves make transitions and connections between home and school, focusing on children’s agency in and perspective on this relationship. The use and potential of technologies to support the home-school relationship is discussed within these main sections.

This review is intended to serve as an introduction to the broader context of this topic, discussing key issues raised research and practice, to inform professionals and practitioners with an interest in the field. Relationships between home and school have been the subject of many years’ research, and this review does not intend to provide a comprehensive academic analysis of the entire field, to make claims about the ‘effectiveness’ of different approaches, or to provide recommendations for policymakers or practitioners.

Obama signs technology access bill for disabled - Associated Press - 9 October 2010

Blind and deaf people will be able to more easily use smart phones, the Internet and other technologies that are staples of life and work under a bill signed into law on Friday.

Such a step has been a priority of advocates for the millions of people who cannot see or hear.

In the East Room of the White House, where he was flanked on stage by lawmakers and Stevie Wonder, President Barack Obama portrayed the occasion as another step in guaranteeing equal access, opportunity and respect for all Americans.

He recalled celebrating this year's 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, banning workplace discrimination against qualified people with disabilities and requiring improved access to public places and transportation.

"We've come a long way but even today, after all the progress that we've made, too many Americans with disabilities are still measured by what folks think they can't do, instead of what we know they can do," Obama said.

The new law "will make it easier for people who are deaf, blind or live with a visual impairment to do what many of us take for granted," he said, from navigating a TV or DVD menu to sending an e-mail on a smart phone.

"It sets new standards so that Americans with disabilities can take advantage of the technology our economy depends on, and that's especially important in today's economy when every worker needs the necessary skills to compete for the jobs of the future," Obama said.

In one corner of the East Room, sign language interpreters translated Obama's remarks as he spoke. Across the room, his words scrolled on a large video monitor with help from a stenographer who transcribed them.

Under the law, the quality of life will improve for 25 million people who are blind or have difficulty seeing, along with the estimated 36 million people who are deaf or hard of hearing, advocacy groups say.

Nondisabled people stand to benefit, too. They may find the devices and screens easier to use.

The law sets federal guidelines that require the telecommunications industry to:

-Make getting to the Internet easier by improving the user interfaces on smart phones.

-Provide audible descriptions of on-screen action to help the blind more fully enjoy television.

-Add captions to online TV programming to help the deaf.

-Make the equipment used for Internet telephone calls compatible with hearing aids.

-Add a button or other switch to television remote controls for simpler access to closed captioning on television.

Paul Schroeder, a vice president at the American Foundation for the Blind, said many blind or deaf people have had to spend hundreds of dollars on costly accessories or software to make their cell phones and other devices easier to use.

"We hope that companies will start working immediately on making solutions available and affordable for people with disabilities," he said.

Blind since childhood, Schroeder described the bill as "life changing."

"As a person who is blind, it will bring some of the new technologies that are changing the workplace, education and leisure into my hands," he said.

China reaps rewards of ICT growth - Scidev Net - 17 February 2010

China's commitment to a strong ICT network benefits both investors and rural comunities, say Cheng Donghong and Jia Hepeng.


A much higher proportion of people in China use information communication technologies (ICTs) than in any other developing country with a similar per capita income — the country is home to an estimated 338 million Internet users.

This is partly due to China's strong economic growth over the past 30 years, which has created more social wealth and higher disposable incomes, leading to stronger demand for ICTs.

Another factor has been the growth in large-scale manufacturing, which has lowered production costs and made ICTs increasingly affordable to broader populations.

But is this growth in ICT use serving development goals, or is it merely lining corporate pockets?

A rich harvest

Balancing these outcomes is a serious challenge for policymakers. But the two are not wholly incompatible.

For example, investing in ICT infrastructure in remote regions will almost certainly generate little profit at first, but can bring greater financial returns in the longer term.

China Mobile, the country's largest telecommunications operator, has invested heavily in rural areas. The company claims that more than half of its new users since 2007 are in rural areas, even though the per capita income in these regions is only a third of that in cities.

The development of rural areas that results from being better connected and better informed also brings long-lasting financial returns.

In the rural Ningxia Autonomous Region, for example, telecoms operators and ICT companies have joined forces with the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) in setting up a centre to provide online information, text messaging services and ICT training for poor rural farmers.

So far the project has trained about 170,000 farmers to use the Internet. And since mid-2007, farmers in the region's Pingluo County have used the centre to sell produce worth an estimated 230 million yuan (US$34 million).

By providing economically valuable and relevant information on agricultural technologies and markets, the operators have secured growth in the use of their services and created sustainable returns.

Government support

But we cannot rely on economic factors alone to fulfil developmental objectives. In China, the strong government and its firm commitment to promoting social development are also crucial.

Many Chinese telecoms corporations are owned by the state, and ICT companies are strongly influenced by government attitudes. This puts the government in a strong position to establish ICT projects that provide social services and promote social development.

It has already achieved much in this arena. The government's Village-to-Village project, launched in the early 1990s, has extended television, telephone — both landline and mobile — and Internet connections to rural areas. By 2010, more than 716,000 villages will have access to satellite TV signals.

The project is not particularly profitable — for example, the network in Inner Mongolia is worth less in financial terms than the network in Beijing, despite being hundreds of times bigger. But the government's influence means that companies have been keen to get involved.

Local solutions

Of course, there are disadvantages to such a centralised system too.

The most notable drawback is that there is little incentive to link to local communities. This can lead to the provision of training or technical support where it is not needed or the introduction of farming technologies that are inappropriate to local conditions.

But there are clear signs that the situation is improving.

The Safety and Mutual Help Network, for example, is an emergency service for rural areas that represents a new form of partnership between industry and local communities.

The network was established when rural communities in Shandong Province asked for a security service because many young people were leaving to work in cities, and the old and weak left behind became vulnerable to attack, robbery and accident.

The telecoms company China Unicom responded by connecting every telephone line to the public loudspeaker in the village broadcasting station so that in an emergency anyone can quickly send out an SOS message to the whole community. Nearly seven million people across China are now signed up to the project.

Closer links

Social organisations such as CAST are also increasingly helping rural communities.

For example, local CAST branches have established instant-messaging links that allow farmers and experts to communicate efficiently on agricultural, technological and production issues. They have also developed an online chat room for both sides to exchange their experience and expertise.

In one rural suburb of Dalian city, the local CAST branch helped 2,000 farmers develop mushroom farming — increasing their income by US$2.9 million — through online video training and chat rooms.

Chinese ICT companies are also beginning to work more closely with local organisations overseas. For example, the Chinese telecom manufacturer Huawei sponsored Bangladesh's entire delegation, including academics and members of local civil organisations, to attend the World Congress on ICT for Development held in Beijing in September so they could learn from China's experience.

By working more closely with end-users and community organisations, Chinese ICT companies are ensuring that its rapidly expanding ICT networks deliver real developmental benefits.

A panel discussion at the Guardian's Activate 2010 summit illustrated how simple, cheap technology, adapted to the local context, is helping to lift people out of poverty.

It seems improbable that in parts of the world where there is little sanitation or electricity and the largely illiterate population are subsistence farmers that mobile phones and computer technology are being received with great enthusiasm.
It seems equally improbable that maize and the media would be discussed at the same forum, but that is exactly what happened during the developing world panel session at the Guardian's Activate 2010 summit yesterday afternoon.

The five panellists came from disparate backgrounds, but all shared one common aim: to use technology to change the lives of some of the world's poorest people.

All the speakers conveyed the incredible hardship of human life in the different parts of the world in which they worked – from the struggles of smallholder farmers in rural Kenya to the victims of the Haiti earthquake – but illustrated how simple, cheap technologies, adapted to the local context, are helping to lift people out of poverty.

Whether through KickStart's low-cost irrigation pumps, capital education reform pioneered by One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), the work of Question Box to provide easy-access information or even the pioneering use of mobile technology by large corporations, such as Vodafone and Thomson Reuters, technology is helping to challenge the status quo for the poor.

Reuters provided "better, actionable information" through Market Light, a commodities information trading tool for farmers in India, which has attracted 200,000 farmers in 15,000 villages across 10 states in the last two and a half years.

Rose Shuman, founder of Question Box, reiterated the value of information and explained how her company was "leveraging human infrastructure" to provide information to communities in India and Uganda, where people were not only illiterate but encountered other language and technical barriers.

David Cavallo, vice-president of OLPC, acknowledged the role of universal primary education in poverty reduction, but said it was preparing children for an unknown future, using obsolete tools. Technology has a role everywhere, he said, but added that in places like Rwanda or Haiti technology provided a way to boost the "learning environment beyond where you can take it with incremental changes."

Cavallo explained that the biggest impact technology had on people's lives was social. Children in favelas in Brazil who received laptops not only had an improved sense of self-worth (which reduced absenteeism from school), but they started to teach their parents to read. In Uruguay, access to computers became a catalyst for e-governance.

But technology as a driver of development has its limits. The Comic Relief/Vodafone RedAlert partnership may have enabled £2m to be raised in 90 seconds through SMS fundraising, but after all the interfacing, tweeting and poking, it still seems that infrastructure (road linkages, storage facilities, a good legal system and access to finance) and the will of people to look beyond themselves and their own networks are still vital for development to happen.

What was also clear was that all these ideas must be financially viable to be sustainable: KickStart moved the production of their human powered pressure irrigation pumps from Africa to China because, as Nick Moon, its co-founder explained: "It is cheaper to ship from China to Africa than from Africa to Africa."

The obstacles to realising technology's potential may be considerable, but the resounding conclusion is that technology is a force for good. As David Craig, chief strategy officer of Thomson Reuters said at the end of his talk: "The world might be a tough place, but information can make it better."

Use of text messages, IM and iPods increasing among 100-year olds


May 4, 2010 - The national poll of 100 Americans turning 100 years of age or older this year reveals these centenarians are staying connected to family, friends, current events and pop culture and are increasingly using the latest technologies, including text messages, IMs and iPods, compared with two years ago. 

In addition, centenarians weighed in on societal issues and values in this fifth annual Evercare 100@100 Survey for Evercare by UnitedHealthcare.

Thirty percent feel the current recession is more severe than the 1930s Great Depression, and 90 percent believe that volunteering will create a stronger, healthier America. Eighty-nine percent say they want to be remembered most as a good parent - more so than as a good spouse, friend or employee. 

"Part of our mission as a health and well-being company is to guide Americans on the road to healthy aging and longevity, and who better to serve as a 'GPS navigator' than our centenarians," said Dr. Mark Leenay, UnitedHealthcare senior vice president of medical management and physician services.

"The Evercare 100@100 survey each year reinforces what we know as clinical experts: that making sound lifestyle choices - not just about health and exercise, but by staying connected to social networks and embracing new trends - is the pathway to a long, healthy life." 

The most recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that there are currently about 84,000 centenarians living in the U.S. That number is projected to increase seven-fold to 580,000 by 2040. 

Evercare, a leading care coordination program that offers support to Older Americans in nursing homes, hospice care and services for family caregivers, currently has more than 1,000 centenarians among its health plan membership. 

This year's survey also compares centenarians' lifestyles and beliefs with those of another group of "seniors" - those graduating from college. While more young Americans are expected to reach their 100th birthday than their predecessors, they also face health challenges their predecessors did not, such as an increasing prevalence of obesity and diabetes. 

Among the key findings of the 2010 Evercare 100@100 Survey:
"OMG! GR8 Grandma Texting, Using an iPod and Working Out with Wii Fit!" 

   ● More than 80 percent of the centenarians surveyed say they talk to/communicate with a friend or family member daily. The survey also uncovered an increase in the number of centenarians who say they are using text messaging, IMs, iPods and other technologies.
   ● Eight percent of centenarians surveyed say they have sent someone a text message or an instant message, compared to just 1 percent two years ago.
   ● Twelve percent of centenarians surveyed have listened to music on an iPod or similar device, up from 4 percent three years ago.
   ● Other technologies centenarians have used include: YouTube (11 percent), TiVo (5 percent); Facebook (2 percent); and Nintendo's Wii Fit (1 percent). 

Keeping Up with Celebrity Gossip

   ● Centenarians chose Betty White (57 percent) as their top dinner guest, edging out Bill Cosby (55 percent), the No. 1 guest for the last two years. Rounding out the top five are Bill Clinton (54 percent), Michelle Obama (44 percent), Sarah Palin and Nancy Pelosi (tied at 31 percent). Actually, Bill Cosby was the top choice among college seniors (72 percent). 

   ● Two years ago Tiger Woods came in second behind Bill Cosby as centenarians' top dinner guest pick. This year, 57 percent of centenarians surveyed say he would not be invited. 

Comparing Today's Recession with the Great Depression

   ● Centenarians have weathered many an economic storm. When asked about the current recession, 30 percent of centenarians surveyed say that it is more severe than the Great Depression, and more than a third (35 percent) say that the recession has affected their ability to continue to live out their retirement/end-of-life plans. 

"Eat. Pray. Exercise." - Centenarians Reveal Lifestyle Choices for a Long Life

In the current era where obesity and related diseases such as diabetes and heart disease threaten to shorten the lives of America's youth, centenarians surveyed again remind us that choosing healthy foods and exercising are essential for a long, healthy life. 

   ● Three out of four centenarians surveyed say they eat nutritionally balanced meals every day, while only 44 percent of college seniors say they do the same. Nearly one-third of the centenarians say they eat organic foods regularly. 

   ● Forty-one percent of centenarians surveyed say they walk or hike at least once a week; 31 percent garden; 6 percent practice Tai Chi, yoga or meditate; 5 percent play a sport such as basketball, tennis, baseball or soccer; 4 percent ride a bike; and 2 percent run. 

   ● 62 percent of centenarians surveyed pray, meditate or engage in spiritual activity daily. 

"Raise Your Hand" - Both Groups of Seniors Say Volunteering Is Important for Health

Several studies have shown the benefits of volunteering on people's health and well-being, and the Evercare 100@100 Survey findings support this theory: 

   ● Nearly 20 percent of centenarians surveyed say they currently do some type of volunteer work.
   ● Nine in 10 centenarians and 94 percent of college seniors agree that volunteering can help create a stronger, healthier America. 

"The bottom line in longevity is consistent and clear: be active until you can't. Stay connected and engaged.  Try new things and challenge yourself. These are the common themes among those who live into their later years," said Dr. Leenay.

Survey Methodology
GfK Roper interviewed 100 centenarians (ages 99 and higher at the time of the interview) by telephone between March 22-April 1, 2010, obtained from a non-probability sample of older Americans. The poll did not include older respondents whose potentially frail condition would not allow them to participate in a telephone interview. Therefore, the responses for these centenarians should be interpreted as being indicative (not statistically representative) of the views of healthy and articulate Americans in this age range. GfK Roper also conducted a total of 1,002 online interviews between March 22-April 2, 2010, with U.S. residents age 20-22 who expect to graduate from a four-year college or university in 2010.

Top Senior Living company The Arbor Company chooses Sitelligence for Cyber Seniors Program - Free Press Release - May 2010

The Arbor Company of Atlanta, Georgia selects Southern California technology company Sitelligence Inc. to create a very successful program for seniors to use Internet technology, called CyberSeniors.

Making computers easy to use and developing other senior based technologies is a billion dollar industry expected to grow to 20 billion by 2020. Studies report learning how to use a computer and the Internet helps seniors be active again and exercise the most important muscle in their body, the brain. It helps them build confidence, stave off the onset of Alzheimer's, stay connected with their loved ones and feel connected to the world around them. For many seniors computers also help them find more purpose in their old age.

The Arbor Company of Atlanta, Georgia manages 14 senior living communities in the Southeast and has partnered with Southern California based technology company Sitelligence Inc. to create a very successful program for their residents called CyberSeniors. â€oeCyberSeniors was a vision of the Chairman of the Arbor Company, M.E. Costello,― says Laura Ellen McAvoy, Director of Operations. "M.E. has always taken pride in being an innovative thinker and as computers and e-mail became more of the way of the business world, he thought it a great tool for our residents and families as well. In addition to promoting an alternative form of communication, this program provides each resident the opportunity to learn basic computer skills in a less invasive setting."

When we found that the Sitelligence Resident and Family Portal was completely web based, offering the ability to logon from anywhere with internet access, we knew we'd potentially found a great partner. Along with being web based, we found Sitelligence easy for residents to navigate with large font and one-click access to communication and other important functions for seniors. It is also very simple for staff to use and update with community information for families.
